21st February 2021 Hiking - Walking: Hemley circuit Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: Saturday 21st February - walk **** - Hemley circuit – Sunny morning then clouded over. The mild weather continues here in Felixstowe and we start with a sunny morning with light winds. Mag potters in the garden with her seedlings while I do my exercises with the cats looking on keen to get out, their outdoor life will come but perhaps not for a few more weeks! Then I packed some yummy chicken sandwiches which were a bit of a butter fest and we couldn’t face a bike ride so we took the van, driving the 8 miles to one of our favourite spots, Hemley Church. Sadly, loads of people had had the same idea and we have never seen so many cars parked here, the shape of things to come with foreign travel difficult for the foreseeable future more people our going to discover these lovely places! We manage to get a parking space and eat our lunch before heading down to the River Deben through the farm, this route is still marked ‘foot path closed’ but we know the work they were doing finished months ago! It was very muddy as we headed down to the River Deben with this mornings sun all but gone but we quickly saw a hare, a good way to start our walk :)! We did a small detour down to the river bank as a couple od yachts slowly beat down river, there was a huge flock of noisy geese, plus curlews and ducks. We caried onto Kirton Creek trying our best to avoid the worst of the mud returning along the old hedgerow with views down to a large dyke over a meadow. There were the usual grazing geese but then we saw the highlight of the afternoon, a barn owl hunting back and forth looking for voles in the grassy meadow, diving down several times! It sat in a small tree for a while, a bit too far for a brilliant pic and then started hunting again, I tried to get some pics in flight but my technique and all the pics are blurred, I need to work on it! Then back to Hemley Church and home for cuppa and cake, top walk especially seeing the owl, our first for several years! Photo Gallery Here |
